Info
A powerup in Carma2, CarmaTDR, Carma64
Type Item
Use Timed
Amount 10 seconds
10 uses (Carma64)

The Afterburner is a common item that grants the player some extra speed, as well as an added shift to the car's suspension. Being an item, this is used by holding the item button rather than pressing it once, like most other items. The Afterburner can be used sparingly by tapping the activation key rather than holding it.

This is arguably one of the best powerups in the series. It can cancel other powerups in Carmageddon II (read here), it can extend flight periods in Carmageddon: TDR 2000 (read here), and overall, it can help the player get out of several harsh situations, such as being stuck on top of a ped's corpse. This powerup will cause the most damage out of the speed-related powerups, because it multiplies the speed by 9.5 (in the first 2 games, at least): even more than the hot rod's 8x multiplier!

Carmageddon II[]

Unlike Carmageddon: TDR 2000, if one uses the Afterburner when driving in reverse, it'll speed up the reverse driving. Using it in mid-air is useless.

To obtain it with cheats, press Ctrl+Shift+1 when in cheat mode or type HOTASS.

The afterburner has the ability to cancel out certain powerups, similar to the Powerup Cancellificatinizer:

This means that it can cancel all speed-related powerups (action index 9), but for some reason, it can also cancel some bad powerups that have nothing to do with speed.

Carmageddon: TDR 2000[]

Using this powerup causes flames to spew from the rear of the car, in a similar fashion to N20 in other racing games. This can even make the car fly, to a degree. Activating it in mid-air will propel the vehicle forward. This can be used for some neat stunts, as well as reaching places an ordinary jump wouldn't.

Flames spewed can set peds on fire and grant an extra bonus to the player.

Unlike Carmageddon II, one cannot use the Afterburner when in reverse, as it'll stop the car from reversing and quickly make it speed forward.

Carmageddon 64[]

The item provides a limited number of bursts of speed. [confirmation needed]
